A little over a year ago I chatted with Max Kalehoff (105 owner) over a beer at the awards ceremony ending Manhasset Fall Series. He informed me of a severely damaged 105 ~ Planet Claire that had many parts already stripped, and her fate yet determined. The following Monday I sent the owner, John Koten, an email- stating that after I recently purchased a home, and sunk the vast majority of my savings into- I didn’t have much to offer- but wanted Planet Claire nonetheless. A year later- we walked away with first place in our 105 division- and The John B. Thompson, Sr. Award for Best Overall in One Design. Not only the boat that my staff has worked tirelessly over, or the trophies my crew gave so much energy towards- but in the end I also gained a good friend in John- a generous man I’m fortunate to have met.
